AVIAN SANCTUARY
A sanctuary designed to comfort
Blue Jays.
RESEARCH
The goal of this project was to design a avian sanctuary, not a bird house, for a selected bird. This pushed us designers to think outside the box and create a unique living space.
2D + 3D EXPLORATION
My initial sketches focused on the necessities of a Blue Jay, which is why they look more like traditional bird houses. After I had a sense of how to design a space for Blue Jays I began to sketch more abstractly. And then bringing my three favorite initial concepts to three dimensional form.
ITERATIONS
Decided on the idea of a wall mounted sanctuary and explored many different variations.
FURTHER MODELS
Created my first full scale mid fidelity model in the wood shop. After this I revisited low fidelity to tweak minor details before I started my high fidelity model.
FINALIZED DESIGN
BUILD PROCESS
Used the chop, ban, and table saw for all my wood cuts and joinery instead of screws for sturdiness. Sliced, bent, and punched holes in the sheet metal and finally stained the wood to a nice red oak.
FINAL SHOTS
A open wall mounted Blue Jay house with … That also resembles the silhouette of a bird, and my initials OG.
